First impressions of the Warrior M2R Pro

By Christian Southward

I'm sure many of you will know what an absolute banger this torch is but... I picked it up in the sale.  I actually wanted a warrior X pro or warrior X Turbo.  But the ocean camo pattern on the M2R Pro called to the magpie in me!  I wasn't disappointed either, the pattern is really lovely, it really shines, very eye catching.

The kit it comes with is great too, the lanyard and holster are great to have. The crenulated bezel is quite sharp, it would definitely get through the fabric if pocket carried, so the holster is invaluable.  Having an adjustable lanyard keeps it secure on my wrist, I can carry it, confident it won't get dropped or misplaced.

The fit and finish, the machining, style and heft all tell you it's a top quality product.  I can't find any fault there.  Perhaps my only niggle so far (and I've got to really nit-pick with this) is that the side switch isn't that easy to find in the dark, it takes a bit of rolling the torch around to locate it.  I'm sure it'll become easier with use.  Even if it doesn't, it's not something that bothers me.

But it's use.  Man, what a torch!  I was at first a little unsure about spending 80-odd quid on a torch but I'm glad I did.  I often go for a late-night walk on a large field at the back of my house.  Being able to easily switch through the various light outputs is a great thing to have.  The light thrown out on all settings is all useable, even the lowest setting lights up the path ahead nicely, and not so bright that it ruins my night vision for a little naked eye stargazing.

The turbo setting is unreal!  I've never seen a torch chuck out so much quality light, both as a spot and a wider arc, all at once.  There are a few dark, overgrown corners on the field, I think they won't have had as much light during the day than when I get the turbo glaring into them!

While the torch is a little big for pocket EDC, it's taken up a very welcome place in my maxpedition neatfreak EDC bag.   It'll go everywhere I go.  I like having multiple lights on me but I've been relying on cheapo lights that are little better than stocking fillers.  They've all been replaced with i3T and i5T.  But the M2R Pro is very much pride of place and the one I definitely want with me.  I especially like the defensive capability that comes from the strength of the torch and the crenulated bezel.  Whichever way I think about it, I can walk much more confidently on my own at night, in the dark (not so much on the turbo setting!)  I have some woods nearby too so I'll get a test run in there in coming days.  I worked in a coastguard search and rescue team some years ago.  I wish we had the kind of ocapability and oversatility that this torch offers.

I'm delighted with the torch, a stunningly good piece of kit. I'm very glad to have bought direct from #OlightUK , their customer service is about as good as I've ever had.

Olight Olantern Mini

Below is a brief overview of the Olight Olantern Mini Camping Light.

The full review can be found at thecampingequipment.com.

Camping can get very dark at night as there is usually minimal lighting on campsites… so you definitely need to bring your own lighting.

Let’s have a look to see if the Olantern Mini can do the job of sufficiently lighting up your campsite at night.

Light Quality

The Olantern Mini has a tornado-shaped light diffuser that produces a 360º balanced, uniform beam – the diffuser softens the light output, thus reducing eye strain.

I found the light to be very comfortable to use, even for an extended period of time.

The Olantern Mini has many useful features such as a motion sensor to locate the power button in the dark and the red light to preserve night vision.

It’s also extremely small and portable making it ideal for a camping kit list as it won’t add a great deal of weight or volume.

Olight Warrior Mini 2 Compact Tactical Torch Review

Olight Warrior Mini 2 Compact Tactical Torch Review

The Olight Warrior Mini 2 is an upgrade to the very popular Olight Warrior Mini. With improved power and throw in addition to a few new features, let's see if the new version is worth the upgrade.

The Warrior Mini 2 comes with a high-performance LED and is powered by a customized 3500mAh 3.6V 18650 rechargeable lithium battery with a maximum output of 1750 lumens and maximum throw of 220m - that's 17% brighter and 16% further than the original Olight Warrior Mini.

It's still fairly light and compact - weighing only 122g and having a total length just under 12cm.

As with the majority of Olight torches - charging occurs directly through the tail cap using Olight’s signature magnetic charging cable.

My Impressions

Beam Quality

As with all the Olight torches that I have tested - the Warrior Mini 2 has an excellent, well-balanced uniform beam - providing good throw to see things in the distance and equally good flood for near objects.

1750 lumens

500 lumens

The Olight Warrior Mini is an excellent all round tactical torch and the Warrior Mini 2 is even better..

It's slightly heavier and slightly longer than its predecessor, but not by much... it's still extremely portable and the improved brightness and throw more than make up for the increase in weight and size.

In addition to this there are new features, such as the proximity sensor and detachable lanyard.

500 lumens will be bright enough for the majority of outdoor activities and a runtime of 218 minutes at that level before needing a re-charge is very good.

And of course, if you do find yourself needing more light - then you've got a whopping 1750 lumens to hand too!

Northern Stroll reviews: The Olight Perun 2 Head Torch

Northern Stroll reviews: The Olight Perun 2 Head Torch

Olight’s brand new Perun 2 is an improved version of their original Perun, one of the more powerful in their head torch range. Featuring a larger battery, greater runtime and tweaks to performance, the Perun 2 also adds an impressive 500 lumens to ‘turbo mode’. We’ve been lucky enough to get our hands on one before launch, so decided to throw it into the rigors of a night-time hike and photoshoot out in the Peak District to see what’s what.

 First Impressions

Unusually shaped, the Perun 2 is marketed as a versatile and multi-functional head torch, more powerful than the original yet retaining the ability to use hands free for convenience if desired. Both Perun’s are a strange thing to look at at first, as unlike a traditional hand torch, the light does not come from the end of the torch and instead comes out at 90 degrees. This means the Perun 2 can be pretty easily used in the hand, or attached to a backpack or shirt pocket with the clip so the light is shining away from the body to be used hands free.

The Perun 2’s lens provides a nice wide, soft radius with a pretty sizeable hotspot in the centre which can throw up to 166m. Having run this alongside the olight Warrior X Pro, we can also now fully appreciate the difference between flood and throw - of which the Perun 2 is definitely excellent for flood, and has a nice broad coverage area which is perfect for up close lighting and carrying out tasks in your immediate area (such as rifling through camera bags in total darkness).

Olight seems to have really improved the lower end of the performance scale with this update to the Perun 2, adding a whole 2 days runtime in ‘moon’ mode and adding 3 hours to the mid runtime to bring it up to 18 hours with no loss in illumination. These gains may well be from the slightly larger 4000ma battery now used as standard vs the original 3500.

The Perun 2 retains the original infrared sensor as well, designed to automatically dim to 30 lumens if something comes within too close a proximity and will then shut down if the obstruction continues for more than 60 seconds. This is useful if the torch hasn't been put into lockout mode and turns on in a pocket or backpack, as it will then turn itself off if the obstruction remains too close, saving battery life and preventing overheating. However the sensor can be blocked by rainwater or a buildup of mist and so take care to avoid completely submerging or getting very wet, or risk a very sudden drop in your illumination!

There are also the same five brightness levels as the previous Perun (although improved all round). The torch is turned on and off with a push button located on top. The button itself has several functions depending on the length of press e.g. you can control the brightness level when the torch is on by holding the switch to cycle through moonlight, low, mid and high in turn, whilst a quick double click will enable ‘turbo’ mode. The moonlight mode of 5 lumens can still be accessed directly when the torch is off by pressing and holding down the switch and the now pretty standard ‘brightness memory’ is still here as well.

Similar to the original, there is also a morse code SOS mode, activated by three quick presses of the button. We’re unsure how useful this mode is, but we hope never to find out. (Any mountain rescue folks out there please let us know).

Specifications & technical stuff

 Operational Modes

Turbo: 2500 lumens for 2 minutes runtime dropping to c.830 lumens; for 2 hours 10 minutes, followed by 500 lumens for 45 minutes of runtime to prevent overheating.

High: 500 lumens for 4 hours runtime dropping to c.260 lumens for 30 minutes runtime to prevent overheating

Mid: 120 lumens; 18 hours runtime

Low: 30 lumens; 66 hours runtime

Moonlight: 5 lumens for 12.5 days runtime

Throw: up to 166m

Waterproof to: IPX8

Impact resistance: 1.5m drop rated

Weight: 161g including battery

The Perun 2 itself comes very well presented with battery, headband for torch with silicone bracket, USB charging cable, lanyard and clip.

 Final thoughts

For our needs hiking and photographing the outdoors, the Olight Perun 2 is great. The flood is wide enough you don’t need to adjust it often if at all, leaving your hands free to scramble, read a GPS or do anything else you fancy doing in the cold and the dark with your hands.

For those that own a Perun already, the increase in battery and runtime may not be worth a direct swap but for anyone who is finding their head torch (of say a max 400 lumens) is leaving them wanting more this is the torch for you. Really this is primarily a headlamp, but with so much more versatility. For us, this will probably spend more time clipped to a bag for us than on our heads (to avoid accidentally meeting a camera on the way up), but having that dual functionality is excellent and no doubt many people would do the opposite.

We’ll keep taking the Perun 2 out with us over the winter and post an update once lockdown ends and we’re able to get out and go further and get to grips with all it can offer, so do come back to the blog in the new year.

Camping is one of the best outdoor experiences and for me camping in the winter tops the lot… there’s nothing quite like the feeling of a crisp winter morning to ease your worries and to become truly one with nature!

A lot of people who have never camped before or only do the occasional summer camp, think that the idea of winter camping is absolutely crazy and I’ve had plenty of people tell me that…

However I beg to disagree – as long as you have the right equipment, camping in the winter rates with the best outdoor activities you can experience.

But the key is to have the right equipment, if you don’t – then it will quickly become a miserable time that you will never want to experience again.

In the winter it tends to get dark early – so if you want to be able to still function during those dark hours, then you are going to need a good light to enable you to see what you

I’m going to be looking at the Olight Olantern camping light to see if it really is a useful addition to your camping equipment to brighten up those long winter nights…

The Olantern comes with two interchangeable light sources – a high performance neutral white LED and an ambient flickering flame.

It’s powered by four 3.7V 18500 1900mAh rechargeable lithium-ion batteries (built-in), which can give around 1500 charging cycles.

The weight is only 347g, which is quite light for a lantern and it’s also compact with a height of just under 14cm and a diameter of just under 7cm.

As with the majority of Olight lights – charging occurs using Olight’s signature magnetic charging cable which attaches to the magnetic area at the base of the lantern.

My Impressions

Light Quality

The Olight Olantern - Portable Camping Lantern has an impressive LED white light that produces a uniform 360º light distribution.

Mode 1 (360 lumens) is very bright and will really light up your campsite at night.

Mode 2 (120 lumens) is sufficient for most campsite settings and gives enough light to be able to see, but not too bright so as to take away from the night-time camping feeling.

Mode 3 (30 lumens) is useful for use in a smaller, closed setting – such as inside a small tent.

The neutral white LED can be interchanged for an ambient flickering flame to give a more relaxed, party like feel, share your good times with family or friends.

Charging the Olantern is very straightforward and takes place via Olight’s signature magnetic charging cable that is used on the majority of Olight’s lights.

This method of charging is very unique and simple, yet extremely practical – the magnet at the base of the lantern easily attracts the charging base and can be done with one hand.

There is a standard USB on the other end that can be used with any USB plug or portable battery.

The magnetic pad on the cable has a charging light next to it that lights up red when charging and green once fully charged and it takes 7 hours to fully charge the batteries from flat.

Power Button & Modes

The power button is located on the side of the torch and has a motion-sensitive battery indicator that fades on and off, this allows the lantern to be located in the dark.

A short press of the power button switches the lantern on and off.

To cycle through the three modes, switch the lantern on and then hold down the power button.

When switched on the Olantern will return to the mode it was on when it was last switched off.

The battery indicator also shows the battery level as indicated below:

The lantern can also be locked by pressing and holding the power button, while it is off, for a few seconds – pressing and holding it again unlocks it. When the lantern is locked, the power button battery level indicator will light up red when pressed.

The base is made of a texturised rubber that really grips to any surface and prevents slipping.

The rest of the main body is made of a tough plastic material that gives the impression of being very resistant to knocks and falls.

Hanging Hook

The hanging hook is a useful addition for carrying or if you want to hang the lantern from a tree branch or hook.

It’s wrapped in silicone to stop it slipping and I found it to stay in place, even on a horizontal protrusion.

I was really impressed with the Olantern – it’s very well-made and has the feel and look of an extremely premium product.

Olight always seem to think of the small details to make their products that extra bit useful and the Olantern is no exception…

From the motion sensitive battery indicator to enable you to locate the lantern in the dark to the rubber base that grips to any surface.

It’s these small attention to details that really makes the Olantern stand out from the crowd and leads me to say that it would definitely be a useful addition to anyone’s camping equipment.

I will certainly be taking mine on every camping trip, especially my favourite winter ones.

The Olight Olantern is available from Olight UK

I hope you’ve found this review useful.

Four steps to pick your perfect kit!

Four steps to pick your perfect kit!

Author: Britain Reviews

Camping in the wilderness can be such a fun and relaxing adventure, which can offer a wonderful escape from routine and offer all the benefits of nature. At night, though, it can be uncomfortable and disorienting, since we are not night creatures and it isn’t our usual environment, so you can find yourself struggling to get back to your tent or to be able to spot something in the dark. So to be sure that you come well-equipped, make sure you bring and carry around with you one of the most used and underrated items: a camping torch. People often make the mistake of thinking that anything that emits light, like a mobile phone (which can really make your battery run out very quickly!), will be good enough for their outdoor needs. But investing in a good torch will give you way more possibilities, comforts and be more reliable than other light sources.

So what type of torch is best for camping?

Torches have come a long way and now offer a lot of possibilities. They can be very powerful and long-lasting, and you can find many uses for them: from helping you find the bathroom at night to making coffee in the morning, or hanging from your tent so you can read or look through your backpack. Some lights are now solar-powered, some have adjustable light output, others are waterproof and they all vary in weight and shape. Some also cost just a few pounds while others can be over a hundred, depending on the different features available.

It is important to consider the camping experience that you want and exactly what type of torch will cover your needs. Since nowadays there’s such a broad range of products and features in torches, here are a few important characteristics outlined so you can easily figure out which torch you need and create a well-lit environment at night for you and your companions.

1. Dimensions, shape and type

There are some torches that come in the shape of lanterns which can be used more for setting up a fixed place around the camping site, headlamp for when you need to be hands-free, heavy-duty torches if you want them to be capable of enduring some hits, or work and tactical torches which are made for professionals who need a reliable light source that meets certain technical requirements.

2. Battery

You can find torches with rechargeable batteries that will save you money over the long term, lithium batteries for long-term performance, or common batteries such as AA or AAA which have good performance, are cheaper and sometimes easier to use. Nowadays, the brightest lights are LED torches powered by Li-ion (lithium-ion) batteries, because they can provide the watt power needed in an energy-dense package.

3. Beam and brightness

Lumens are the unit of measure for brightness and an easy way for you as a consumer to find out if the torch meets your standards. The beam refers to the distance the light can reach. Nowadays, technology is making torches over 1000 lumens to be the new norm, making them common and affordable. 100 lumens is standard for an average torch which can help you be spotted on a road, for example; 300 lumens can help you search for something at 50 meters distance and can light up a small room; 1000 lumens and up, that’s a very powerful torch which is used by professionals and can easily light up a large area.

4. Other features

Other features to look for are resistance to impact and water because you never know when it will take a fall or it can start raining; an adjustable beam, to obtain better focus and to change the range of the surface you want to light up; and it can be even more practical if it has multiple uses, like having a rechargeable torch with LED lights which can last for a very long time.

High quality torches for nearly any scenario

Olight was established in 2006 and they manufacture portable and high-quality illumination products. After breaking successfully into the EU market, they focused on taking it one step further by designing even higher quality products that could be used by law enforcement and government agencies. This way they have created a broad range of items to suit every need and activity, and have kept innovating in their field. For example on the range of triple-A battery flashlights, users can find the Olight i3T, a tail switch EDC torch with 180 lumens, interesting. Or if you are interested in a high-range LED s, the Olight M2R Warrior can be a good choice, with a maximum of 1500 lumens output. And one Olight torch which offers multiple interesting features is the Olight PL Pro. It has a rail adapter that allows it to be installed on weapons with a heavy-duty quick attach and release mounting system.

Perhaps one of their most comprehensive products is their Olight Warrior X Pro Tactical Torch, also the top seller of Olight in uk, a recent addition to their catalogue. This type of tactical torch has the following features:

  • Capable of producing 2,100 lumens and up to 500 meters of beam throw.

  • A high-discharge 5000mAh 21700 lithium battery and a 2A current for much faster charging than its previous model, the Warrior X.

  • A maximum run time of 8 hours.

  • 2 output modes with different intensities and high-performance NW LED.

  • An IPX8-rated aluminium alloy body which makes it very resistant, enough to endure a 3-meter drop test and it is also waterproof.

  • A vibration battery indicator (for example, at less than 30% battery it starts vibrating every 5 minutes.)

  • A pronounced pattern in its shape for better grip, stainless steel pocket clip and a magnetic tail switch.

  • Warrior X Pro is great for professional hunters, search and rescue, and law enforcement.

Tonight We will have Halloween Sale where the Olight Warrior X Pro will be available in blue, red and green colours. UP TO 40% OFF!

We provide free shipping for orders over £49 for UK and Ireland customers. All products come with a 30-day money-back guarantee and a 5-year warranty.

Olight Warrior Mini – A Super Powerful EDC Torch

Olight Warrior Mini – A Super Powerful EDC Torch

Product: Olight Warrior Mini

Available atOlightStore.uk

Design: High power from a compact EDC torch

Max Output: 1,500 Lumens

Max Throw: 190m

Weight: 105g

The Warrior Mini is at the larger end of everyday carry torches but boasts an impressive maximum output of 1500 lumens. There are several different lighting modes and levels, making it suitable for almost any occasion.

It is powered by a single Olight rechargeable battery with 3,500 mAh of power, allowing this small torch to run continuously for an impressive 45 days.

There are multiple attachments for ease of use and storage, including a wrist lanyard and multi-directional belt clip. The magnetised base also makes it easy to attach to any magnetic surface.

The Olight Warrior Mini has dual buttons. The primary power button not only turns the torch on and off, but also changes the modes and brightness levels. The base mounted button quickly engages turbo mode, saving time when you need the most powerful light output.

The torch can be easily recharged using the included USB charger, which has a magnetic charging dock and convenient light that indicates the charge status.

The Warrior Mini offers 5 different levels of brightness, making it an extremely versatile EDC flashlight.

Turbo mode: Produces 1,500 lumens for 4 minutes with a throw of 190m, reducing to 500 lumens for a further 205 minutes, after which it reduces to 170 lumens for 55 minutes.

High mode: Produces 500 lumens for 218 minutes with a throw of 110m, reducing to 170 lumens for a further 50 minutes.

Medium mode: Produces 120 lumens for 18 hours with a throw of 54 metres.

Low mode: Produces 15 lumens for 150 hours with a throw of 18 metres.

Moon mode: Produces 1 lumens and lasts 45 days on moonlight mode.

There is also a strobe function that can be engaged with three clicks of the torch’s operation button.

The Warrior Mini is both waterproof and impact resistant. It can be submerged to 2m and dropped from a height of 1.5m due to its strong and reliable construction.

Whilst still very much in the category of an EDC flashlight, it is at the larger end compared with some everyday carry torches, such as the S1R Baton II. Much of the Warrior Mini’s size and weight is due to the powerful battery, which provides a large lumen output and a long lasting battery life from each charge.

As you would expect from an EDC torch, the Warrior Mini is lightweight and compact, making it convenient to carry in a bag, on your belt, in a pocket or around your wrist.

Length: 106.5mm

Diameter: 23mm

Warrior Mini is a well-designed torch that combines both everyday carry and tactical elements into a durable and powerful flashlight. Below are some of the standout features.

Easy to carry: Not only is the Warrior Mini lightweight, but it also features a multi-directional clip, wrist lanyard and magnetic base, making it great for everyday carrying.

Incredible Performance: One of the best features of the Warrior Mini is the incredible maximum output of 1,500 lumens with a 190m throw.

Superior Battery: The Warrior Mini has a 3,500 mAh rechargeable battery that can last for an impressive 45 days straight on moon mode.

Tactical Benefits: This small torch has been designed with tactical essentials in mind, from the strike bezel and dual switches to the lockout mode.

Dual Buttons for Extra Control

A rare feature on an everyday carry flashlight, the Warrior Mini comes with 2 switches. The tactical switch on the bottom of the torch can be fully compressed to turn on the turbo mode, or half press for a medium light beam. A long hold of the tail switch will keep the torch on, and then releasing the button will turn it off.

The side operation button provides extended functionality. As well as turning the torch on and off, this button enables the different lighting modes (such as strobing or regular illumination) and changes the brightness.

Another feature of the side button is the inbuilt light indicator for the battery level. A green light indicates more than 60% battery, an orange light means there is between 10-60% battery remaining, with 5-10% battery the light will shine red, and at below 5% the light will blink red.

Recharging the Warrior Mini could not be easier, thanks to the included charging dock. The USB charger has a magnetic base, which quickly locks onto the base of the torch for effortless charging in any situation.

There is a convenient LED light that displays the charge status, with a red indicating that the torch is charging, whilst a green light indicates a full battery. The LED also shines green when the torch is detached from the charger.

Grip, Clip & Lanyard

The Warrior Mini is a very comfortable torch to hold. The metal construction feels sturdy, whilst the weight is equally distributed throughout the torch giving it a balanced in-hand feel.

The textured sides provide ample grip in any weather and whilst wearing gloves. The large tail switch will also make it easy to operate in colder weather or when gloves are worn.

The multi-directional belt clip makes it easy to attach the Warrior Mini to your belt, pocket, hat or anywhere else required. The wrist lanyard is a great addition, especially when this torch is used on hikes. The magnetic base also increases the usability of the torch, as it can be quickly mounted to any magnetic surface.

The Warrior Mini is a small, strong and powerful EDC torch. It has a number of added tactical features, which further enhance the usefulness of this torch for a range of different requirements.

The large battery ensures an extended operational life with minimal recharging. It is built tough, easily withstanding water, dust and drops. If you are shopping for a new EDC torch in the UK, the Warrior Mini is worth checking out.

Olight New Headlamp Perun Mini Desert Tan Limited Edition Review

Olight New Headlamp Perun Mini Desert Tan Limited Edition Review

I was recently sent an Olight Perun Headlamp Mini Desert Tan Limited Edition for review purposes and I have to be completely honest (I always try and be honest in all my reviews anyway), this little torch kept on surprising me!

First I was surprised by the price, my initial impression was that it seemed like a lot to pay for a torch. My second surprise was the size, the package when it arrived was small yet it contains not only a torch but a host of accessories too.

But then when I opened the package and was even more surprised - the torch is a dinky little thing, it easily fits in the palm of my hand!

After that I was very pleasantly surprised by a host more features. The first thing is that the torch comes with its own rechargeable battery. Don't you get so frustrated when there never seem to be any batteries in the house just when you need them?

Then the next surprise was the charging device, it's sooo cool! As it's magnetic it just jumps itself onto the end of the torch. (If you are half blind like me, it's a pain trying to poke chargers into invisible holes.) And you can charge it via any USB port. There is a charging light on the charger that turns green once the torch is fully charged.

Charger attached to the torch.

After the torch was charged I switched it on and this was where I was most surprised of all. Because it has a 1000 lumens lamp it was so bright I almost blinded my husband too. (Note to self, don't switch on a torch while you point it at your beloved's face).

Using this wee little torch I illuminated our entire kitchen, and then I walked into our living room, switched off the lights and put each kid in the interrogation spotlight - one by one.

I wish we had had the Perun Headlamp when Storm Ophelia hit a few years ago, or when the Beast From the East took away our power, or especially when we went camping this past summer - we could have illuminated the way for our camping neighbours too!

Huppy testing out the headlamp in the shed.

This headlamp will be absolutely ideal for when I grovel about in our attic as we have no light up there and by attaching the torch to the headband I will be able to see while I crawl about on my hand and knees looking for the junk we keep up there. It will be very useful in our garden shed in the winter evenings too.

The headlamp will be ideal for camping.

Because the torch is magnetic it can be attached to my car bonnet so that I can even pretend to know what I'm looking at when I poke about in the engine.

The torch with complete set of accessories.

The accessories include the charging cable - which attaches to the back of the torch via a strong magnet, a velcro backed pad with a slot for attaching the torch, an adjustable head band, a lanyard and a pin for threading the lanyard. The velcro backed pad can be attached to any piece of clothing if it has a velcro receptive fabric. The angle of the torch can also be rotated within the holder so that the beam can be directed upwards, straight ahead or downwards, depending on where you would like it to shine.

So I have to say I am EXTREMELY impressed with this powerful little beast of a headlamp torch, it would make an ideal gift for that outdoorsy geek in your life!
